Psychodynamic Counselling

What is psychodynamic counselling?

Psychodynamic counselling helps you understand how your past experiences, especially early relationships, may be shaping how you feel, think, and relate to others in your life now. It’s based on the idea that we are not always conscious of all of our thoughts and emotions. Sometimes, we can feel stuck, or repeat unhelpful patterns without knowing why. This approach to therapy helps bring those hidden patterns into awareness, so you can begin to understand them and make lasting change.

What to expect in sessions

Each session is your time to talk about whatever feels important to you. I will be led by you and listen with curiosity and openness. I will respond in ways that help you to make sense of it and help you to bring awareness to what might have been outside of awareness until now.

How long does counselling last?

The issues that bring you to counselling are often created over many years without you being aware of their origins. Psychodynamic counselling can offer a path to lasting change—not by giving superficial fixes - but by helping you understand the deeper reasons behind your feelings and behaviours. It can take time to explore and navigate the the underlying depths of your issues and so we will work together over time and at a pace that works for you. How long that might be will emerge and develop from the work itself.

Is this right for me?

Psychodynamic counselling is one of many different approaches to helping people and it isn’t right for everyone. When you come for your initial sessions we can think about this together before moving forward to ongoing counselling. It is important that you get the support that feels right for you.
